Since homeopathy accompanies me no matter where I go, I can attest to the benefits of using homeopathy to both prepare for and recover from a highly traumatic surgical procedure.
First of all – thank goodness such medical procedures exist!! Without the technical marvel of joint replacement surgery, osteoarthritis (stemming from pre birth hip misalignment) would be forcing me into a wheelchair just about now. Thanks to my double hip replacement, instead I look forward to many years of normal physical activity as well as further travel exploring our amazing planet. But no matter the reason, surgery is a major assault to the body and requires a great deal of energy to recovery from; using homeopathy alongside conventional medical treatment can greatly support a fast, comfortable and successful recovery.
Homeopathy and Surgery
It’s best to meet with a homeopath before surgery as the type of operation will determine which remedies will be most helpful. Using homeopathy to prepare for surgery lessens the chances of complications however different post-surgical symptoms can call for a variety of remedies. As well, check with your doctor and surgeon – especially if you have any underlying health conditions – and make sure they agree to homeopathic treatment.
Homeopathic remedies impact the total energy system, stimulating our inner resources towards whatever needs to be healed. Because pharmaceutical drugs affect the physical body, most people can take homeopathics alongside allopathic medicine without conflict. Taking a remedy like Arnica before surgery stimulates your system into readiness for the upcoming physical trauma; taking it and other remedies afterwards can help with minimizing blood loss, reducing pain, possible complications and accelerating the healing process.
Arnica – For any kind of surgical treatment or injury situation, Arnica is still the first remedy to take both before and after surgery however you should seek professional advice on potency and repetition. Other helpful remedies can include Hypericum (good for any kind of nerve injury), Rhus-tox (for muscle trauma), Calendula (to help heal open wounds or incisions), Ruta (tendon and bone coverings) and Symphytum (bone breaks and injuries).
Wonderful Traumeel drops from the health food store include some of these remedies and this product can be taken on an on-going basis for some time after surgery, as the potencies are very low (*be aware that Traumeel will soon be unavailable in Canada so stock up while you still can). Traumeel cream can be rubbed daily on any unbroken skin where there is bruising or pain to stimulate healing in that particular area – but never rub it on an open wound or incision.
Abdominal surgery can also be supported by Arnica but another very helpful remedy for deep tissue trauma is Bellis-perennis. Surgery anywhere in the abdomen may also call for Staphysagria and/or Causticum, especially if there are difficulties in returning to normal urination/bowel movements after surgery.
For those who have difficulty with anesthesia, Phosphorus can help settle prolonged vomiting while Nux-vomica is excellent in processing any lingering drug effects, which can include nausea, constipation, sleep issues or general over-sensitivity.
In eye surgery, again Arnica is good both before and afterwards; Ledum and Staphysagria are other remedies pertinent to eye injury. In the case of a detached retina, Arnica and Gelsemium can together promote healing; recently a client whose initial retinal repair didn’t hold went onto a smooth recovery the second time around using those two remedies. For dental surgery, arnica and hypericum are the most commonly needed remedies.
Surgery is a trauma to the body. While time will be needed to heal the discomfort and pain from any surgical procedure, homeopathic remedies can make the recovery faster, easier and lessen the need for lengthy narcotic medication. I stopped all narcotic pain meds a week after my double hip replacement and was off even Tylenol and getting back into the world within 3 weeks. My health and overall immunity has been excellent – while several family members have had colds since my surgery, I never even got a sniffle.
Of course homeopathy is just one of innumerable supports underlying my recovery. I am most grateful for the excellent work of the orthopedic surgeon and his team, the post-op nursing care, the love and generosity of family and friends, additional helpful healing modalities (both alternative and traditional), and other positive influences continually flowing my way.
Thank you all!
So when facing any kind of surgical procedure, consider homeopathy as a practical addition both before and after undergoing the knife. Our bodies will still need time to heal, but the right remedies can mobilize our forces and smooth the road back to health. For those seeking a consultation for upcoming surgery or any kind of homeopathic support, my office is open!
